Trapped in a loveless marriage

Dear Queenie,My husband and I have not gotten along for some time and only stay together for the children.

I had an affair with a married man who also has a bad marriage and we really fell in love, but we both agreed it would be best break it off and keep our families together for the children's sake, but I don't know how I can live this way.

Queenie, tell me what to do!—Trapped in a loveless marriage

Dear Trapped,

Divorce is hard on children, but so is seeing their parents not getting along with each other. Ordinarily I would not recommend breaking up a marriage, but if you both feel the same way about your respective situations, perhaps in this case it would be best for everyone concerned.

Of course, once your children are grown up and out on their own, your situations change and the decision becomes easier.

Meanwhile, professional counselling would help you cope – and help you decide what course of action (or non-action) would be best.

And, if either or both of your respective spouses find(s) out about the affair, the decision may not be up to you.
