Craving peace and quiet

Dear Queenie,

I recently moved into an apartment in what I thought was a quiet neighbourhood, but it turns out that some of the neighbours have dogs that bark at strangers and others tend to do yard work with noisy machines at odd hours.

Queenie, how can I get out of my lease?—Craving peace and quiet

Dear Craving,

I am not qualified to give legal advice such as how to break a lease. For that you should consult an attorney.

However, I have to wonder: When you first came to inspect the apartment before you rented it did you not see that the neighbours’ yards were well-kept and consider how that was done? And did the dogs not bark at you?

Try getting acquainted with the dogs (and their owners). If you are not a stranger to them the dogs probably will not bark at you (as much). And invest in earplugs or noise-suppressing earphones. It will be much easier and cheaper than trying to break your lease and find a quieter place to live – if there even is such a thing.
