Security guard loses eye in machete attack

PHILIPSBURG--A security guard is severely ill in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC), having lost an eye as a result of an attack with a machete.

A police patrol was called around 10:35pm on Tuesday, September 23, to Rouge et Noir Casino where the victim was bleeding profusely from several large wounds to his head and face. On the scene, officers learnt that the man had been attacked with a machete on Boardwalk Boulevard at or nearby Antoine Restaurant.

The victim O.W. works as a security guard for the restaurant at night. An unknown person or persons attacked him at or near the restaurant for unknown reasons.

The victim was treated on the scene by paramedics and then transported to SMMC for further treatment.

The Forensic Department attended the scene to collect evidence. The investigating officers learnt later that O.W. had lost an eye as a result of this attack. His condition is so severe that he was not able to speak to detectives up to press time.

O.W. remains in the SMMC ICU for further medical treatment. The Police Force is requesting that anyone who may have information about the incident or who has any information that can help officers with their investigation contact the police station in person or via telephone at 542-2222, or call the anonymous tip line 9300.
