CARNIVAL VILLAGE--More than 2,000 people steadily streamed into Carnival Village to enjoy local and regional acts in zouk and other genres at the Zouk n’ More concert Wednesday night in what promoter François “Cuchi” Hunt called a comeback for the genre in St. Maarten Carnival.
The concert ended later than expected, with some of the artistes performing more songs than planned, but as stipulated, 11-year-old Tamillia concluded her performance (just) before 10:00pm.
Cuchi told The Daily Herald he found the performances “fantastic” and said he anticipated many coming to see whether the concert would produce what had been promised. He praised the artistes for living up to his expectations and said the public should get ready for next year’s event.
The audience swayed and danced to changing tempos, singing along with many of the popular songs. There was some annoyance at lengthy non-zouk performances, but hosts, radio personalities JMR and Shamrock pointed out that the concert was indeed zouk “and more.”
Two “more” artistes, the popular El Famoso Biberon Secreto and Alison Hinds, were announced as surprise acts just days before the show.
Tamillia, D’Yanick and The Odd Brothers were the first performers to hit the stage, the rest following after band K-Ravan was set up to support all remaining acts.
Remaining artistes to bring a variety of sounds to a ready audience were Christian Nara, Alan Cavé, Jocelyne Labylle, Admiral T, Kim, Marvin, J. Perry, Victor O, Orlane, The Odd Brothers, D’Yanick, Ruffy, Jade, Oswald, Paola and Alex Alexis.
