A thrilling adventure across Paradise
This past weekend, the St. Maarten Sandbar to Buccaneer Road Race took over the island with an exhilarating display of athleticism, camaraderie, and the beauty of St. Maarten's breath-taking landscapes. The event, which has become a beloved tradition, attracted both seasoned athletes and casual participants from around the island, all eager to experience the unique challenge of this annual race.
The race itself offers participants the rare opportunity to traverse one of the island’s most picturesque routes from the iconic Sandbar on the famous Maho Beach to the legendary Buccaneer Beach Bar at Kim Sha Beach. The 5K course winds past our International Airport and through Simpson Bay, with participants running along coastlines, past swaying palm trees, and the Caribbean Sea. The air was filled with excitement, the sounds of laughter, and the occasional cheers as runners made their way along the route.
The race, which started promptly at 5:00pm when the weather is still quite hot, is more than just a physical challenge; it’s a test of endurance, perseverance, and mental strength for many. While scenic, the route is not without its challenges; the last 200 metres are on the soft sand of Kim Sha Beach.
One of the most special aspects of the St. Maarten Sandbar to Buccaneer Race is how it also has a Kayak Race feature for those who couple up into pairs and that can handle a kayak after already running a race.
Buccaneer Beach Bar, which was the main sponsor of the event, provided the perfect post-race experience by offering a free drink ticket to all participants and a separate ticket to get a burger at a discounted rate. The race was organized by the SXM Road Runners who hosted the event with an infectious spirit of island hospitality. It was a true fusion of fitness, fun, kayaking and beach bar tradition.
As the final runners and kayakers crossed the finish line, the energy remained high as the setting sun made for a wonderful Saturday Night. It was the perfect setting with live music by Percy Rankin and the Bunfire Band along with the Buccaneer fireball blazing on the beach. The award ceremony was a festive affair, recognizing the hard work and determination of all participants. In the end, the champions took home trophies and prizes, but perhaps the most valuable reward for all participants was the sense of achievement and pride in completing such a unique challenge.
For anyone who missed this year’s event, it’s clear that you missed out on an awesome race that is fun for all ages. Everyone joined in on the excitement – from the runners, kids, volunteers (including Sarah Wescot-Williams), photographers and spectators – since the Sandbar to Buccaneer Road Race offers up a truly special community spirit.
