PHILIPSBURG—Ryan Susana took top honours in St. Maarten Speedway’s First Beginners race of 2010 Friday. Five new racers took to the eight lane track off the Great Bay Promenade.
Ryan had the best qualifying time of 5.594 and won the race with 119 laps. Second place went to Jazz Holiday with 118 laps. Gregory Susana was not far behind at 107 laps to take third place.
He was followed by Malcolm Arrindell at 104 and Kidd Holiday at 93.
Each car races several minutes on each of the various lanes of the 128 foot long track to determine the ultimate winner.
Between heats the racers worked on their cars. Some use fans to cool the engines, while other lubricate parts or made adjustments to the suspension.
“Here are five new kids that love the sport of model car racing,” said competition organizer Reggie Coram.
Corman who still races internationally explained the sport is open to all ages. He explained, “Come get a car today and get on the track.”
Corman organizes regular races. Sometimes the races are based on experience and other times on the type of model cars that will be used.
The next race will be Friday starting at 6:00pm.
