KINGSTON, Jamaica--The number of escaped prisoners who have been on the run since last month was reduced by one, when 18-year-old Dushane Grayson was shot dead in a confrontation with police.
The teenager, one of eight men who escaped from the Savanna-la-Mar police lock-up in the parish of Westmoreland just over a month ago, was killed in a house in the early hours of Monday.
According to reports, lawmen on patrol in the Prospect community around 4:00am went into a wooden two-bedroom house after noticing the front door open. Police said when they entered the residence, they were confronted by a man who pointed a gun at them, and one of the officers fired a shot in his direction. Grayson, who had been facing a murder charge, was subsequently found with a gunshot wound but he was pronounced dead when taken to the hospital.
Police say he was holding a 9mm Glock pistol when they found him.
Grayson and seven prisoners escaped from the Savanna-la-Mar lock-up on the morning of June 19. One of the prisoners, who is also on a murder charge, was caught as he tried to flee the premises. Among the other six fugitives are four alleged killers. The additional charges which they and the other fugitives face include robbery and gun crimes.
One murder and gun accused is also charged with escaping custody at another police station.
