Memory-impaired

Dear Queenie,

Very often I meet up with someone who seems to know me very well, but I don’t recognise them or if I do, I can’t remember their name.

Queenie, I don’t want to seem rude. What to do?—Memory-impaired

Dear Memory-impaired,

I know exactly what you mean! It happens to me all the time. Try just saying something along the lines of “How nice to see you!” and continuing the conversation. There is a good chance they will say something that will jog your memory.

If that does not happen, be more or less honest. Tell them you just cannot remember their name, or you recognise their face but cannot recall from where. Usually they will help you out, especially if your excuse is a “senior moment.”
