MAHO--The International Association for Caribbean Archaeology (IACA) elected a new board of directors for the 2015-2019 term at its 26th congress held in St. Maarten July 19-25. Among the new board members are two representatives of St. Maarten.
New IACA Board President is St. Maarten archaeologist Jay Haviser. Haviser had held the position of President in the 1990s.
Student Representative is St. Maartener and former St. Maarten Archaeological Centre Simarc student Christopher Velasquez, who is studying archaeology at Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, New York.
The new IACA Board consists of Haviser, Jorge Ulloa Hung (Vice-President, Cuba), Christina Giovas (Director, USA), John Crock (Director, USA), Quetta Kaye (Secretary, UK), Gerard Richard (Treasurer, Guadeloupe), David Hayes (2017 Congress Chair, St. Croix), and Christopher Velasquez.
Haviser said it was in part the “excellent” organisation of the 26th IACA Congress that yielded the result of the two board members.
The organising team members for the congress were Haviser, Paul Ellinger, Chris Velasquez, Elsje Bosch, Amanda Ferrier, Alex Richards, Glenderlin Holiday and Beryl Henriquez.
In addition to the academic presentations by archaeologists from around the Caribbean and farther afield, students of the Youth and Science programmes of Simarc and Sabarc in Saba gave presentations about their research over the last two years.
