Youngsters complete sailing programmes

A season of learning and sailing for young sailors was commemorated on Friday, June 19, when the Sint Maarten Yacht Club (SMYC) held a diploma award ceremony at the club’s docks for kids who had completed their training. Family members, friends, staff and instructors all attended the ceremony and joined in the celebration.

In addition to its Sailability programme, SMYC also has a number of other sailing programmes for youngsters including a primary school programme and an after-school programme. The Sailability programme uses specially designed boats that allow for kids with disabilities to learn to sail on the water. Altogether, the three mentioned programmes have offered sail training to more than 100 kids this year!

SMYC says this sailing season has been “outstanding.” At the ceremony, instructor Sam Peeks offered some wise words: “The progress we’ve seen this season has been truly inspiring. Even students who didn’t receive a diploma this time have made huge strides, and every one of them should be proud. I’m excited to continue building on this next season.”

Congratulations to all youngsters who participated!
