MOU signed for training of students in journalism

PHILIPSBURG--The St. Maarten Chamber of Commerce and Industry (COCI), University of St. Martin (USM) and Bureau Telecommunication and Post St. Maarten (BTP SXM) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly support the “I am SXM” initiative.

Under the initiative, St. Maarten students interested in journalism and seeking a career in the field can follow a 16-week course at USM, the COCI said in a press release on Tuesday.

At least five students will be eligible to participate and be certified in the field of journalism, USM said. The course design, content and certification will be created by USM, which also will provide classroom space.

BTP SXM will make funds available to cover tuition fees and equipment expenses, while COCI will make available its “Biz Centre” facilities and will coordinate the pre-registration and registration process for students found eligible at USM.

COCI said it also would develop with USM the progress monitoring system and conditions for students participating in the programme, to ensure the programme’s success.

COCI said it “strives to support any form of socio-economic growth in St. Maarten and finds this initiative to serve this purpose.”

According to the COCI, the “I am SXM” initiative comes from United People’s (UP) party Member of Parliament (MP) Tamara Leonard.
