CUPECOY--A man was arrested around 7:00pm Wednesday as part of the investigation into threats made to the management of American University of the Caribbean (AUC) School of Medicine.
Police spokesperson Chief Inspector Ricardo Henson said in a press release on Thursday that the suspect’s residence had been searched and several electronic items had been confiscated for further investigation. The suspect was taken to the Philipsburg police station where he will remain in custody for questioning and further investigation.
Henson said the arrest had been made after thorough investigation by the Police Force and the Prosecutor’s Office with the assistance of AUC management and security and the expertise of local communication providers TelEm Group and United Telecommunication Services (UTS). AUC received two threats by e-mail: the first on Monday, August 31, and the second on Tuesday, September 1.
Henson said the investigation was in its preliminary stage and no further information would be given at this time due to the sensitivity of this case.
AUC had increased security on campus earlier this week after receiving the second “threatening communication” on Tuesday. Classes at the institution were disrupted on Monday when AUC had to be evacuated after the university received a bomb threat via the first e-mail received.
In a letter to students dated September 2, AUC said the second communication received “did not warn of an imminent danger to the community.”
