PHILIPSBURG--The Immigration Department is expected to introduce an “automated border clearance solution” system that will accept identification cards with a chip as travel documents for air commute between St. Maarten, Aruba and Curaçao.
Prime Minister William Marlin told Parliament’s Committee for Kingdom Affairs and Inter-Parliamentary Relations on Monday that currently it is possible for residents of Aruba, Curaçao and St. Maarten to travel between these countries with ID cards as travel documents, based on an agreement reached between the Ministers of Justice of these destinations.
Marlin said that while this issue was the responsibility of the Justice Minister, he understood that Immigration would introduce the automated system soon. Marlin was responding to questions from the Parliamentary Committee at the time.
Monday’s meeting was in preparation for the Inter-Parliamentary and Kingdom Relations Consultation IPKO and tripartite meetings in The Hague scheduled from May 31 to June 3.
