Two local student athletes try-out for Dutch U18 Team

PHILIPSBURG—Two St. Maarten student athlets are off to the Netherlands to try-out for the Dutch national Under 18 Basketball Team.

The Performance Sports Academy(PSA) was able to negotiate the try-outs for Malachi Martis, age 16 and Clorvens Celine age 17. Martis is a 6’6 guard. He has the ability to create space for himself and his team mates to score while being on the floor. Martis is considered bt many to be the best player on the island under the age of 18. Celine is a 6’4 shooting guard who has shown that he can play the game at a higher level. Celine is a 2-way type of player in which he prides himself on defense and offense.

The young men will go through a vigorous selection process in the Netherlands from May 29 to the June 4. If selected they would remain in the Netherlands to prepare for the upcoming championship from July 21 to 30.

The team will take part in the FIBA U18 European Championship Division B in Matosinhos, Portugal. The Netherlands has been drawn into group C with Estonia, Ukraine, Romania, Ireland, and Kosovo. For more information contact PSA at 526-0753.
