Sonesta Boardwalk Triathlon set take place Sunday, June 4

PHILIPSBURG--The 35th Annual Boardwalk Triathlon takes place on Sunday, June 4, in Philipsburg, St. Maarten, sponsored this year by Sonesta Maho Resorts. A great turnout from Saba and St. Barths is also expected. Saba’s sports scene has been growing tremendously and they will be participating as individuals and teams. As usual athletes have a choice of doing the Sprint distance or the Olympic distance as individuals or doing either distance in teams of three. But this year a new distance has been added called “Try a Tri” which is open only to individuals and includes a 300-metre swim, 7K bike and 2.5K run, great for first timers with similar distances as the Triple Mini Triathlons. The Sprint distance is a 750-metre swim, 20K bike, and 5K run. The Olympic distance is 1,500-metre swim, 40K bike and 10K run. Age categories for individual men and women, and additional categories for teams and juniors. Start times are 6:30am for the Olympic distance, 6:45am for the Sprint distance, and 7:00am for the Try a Tri. All starts are on the beach in front of Taloula Mango at the St. Rose Arcade on the Boardwalk. All Teams must be of mixed gender even if the team consists of only two people. Every swimming participant must be body marked. Racers must mount and dismount in specified areas of the transition area. No riding or entry allowed in transition area which is only for individual athletes, not teams. Bike participants must wear a properly fitted helmet which must be buckled before leaving the transition area. A swim cap is mandatory. Men (and Women) must wear a top for the cycling and running legs. For the first time in many years, drafting is allowed. Swimmers and runners may also draft. Do not dispose of garbage along the course. Throw used gel or bar packets into a garbage container or keep them with you until you can dispose of them properly. You can throw your water stop cups on the course as they will be picked up by volunteers. No headphones are allowed the event. Participant’s race number must be displayed on the front of the body and be visible to the volunteers at all times. Follow the directions of the Race Director and Volunteers by way of cones and markings on the course. The roads are open to traffic so participants must watch out for their own safety, and obey traffic rules. Each participant must count their own laps. No outside assistance is allowed, apart from refreshments at official water stops. Inform the time keeping officials if you abandon the race or made an error in your laps or course route. For any questions, or for exact course directions on the three event distances, call (+1-721)-545-4384 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. The entry Fee is US $35 per person, and US$25 for Team Members and Juniors (under 18). Entry fee includes a top-quality sports T-Shirt and a delicious breakfast. Volunteers are always welcome!! For visiting athletes: Sonesta Maho Resort located near the airport is offering great rates to participants. Divi Resorts near the start is also offering reduced rates to participants.
