St. Maarten's Morton in WI team to take on English boys

CUL DE SAC--St. Maarten U19 cricketer Israel Morton is a member of the West Indies U19 team to take on their counterparts from England in Grenada.

Morton, a left-arm spinner and right-handed lower batsman, is a talented cricketer who has come through the local cricket system.

Morton joins Keacy Carty and Nathan Edward as players who were selected for the West Indies U19 team, but he has yet to play in a World Cup, unlike the duo.

The tournament against the English boys will be used to finalise the West Indies World Cup team for the Youth World Cup in January 2026 in Zimbabwe and Namibia.

In August/September, the West Indies U19 players contested against Sri Lanka U19 players and won the series 4-3.

Now, they take on England U19 in a seven-match series that bowls off on November 16.

West Indies Under-19s won the first match by 4 wickets.

Morton is a key member of the squad due to his unique bowling action and ability to control the run rate and take wickets for his team.

Against Sri Lanka, he played three out of the seven matches and collected five wickets at 18.8 apiece and an economy of 4.27. His best bowling figures were three for 30 off five overs in the seventh match.

He had scores of 3, 0 and 2 with the bat but is expected to be more consistent in that area.

In the field, the diminutive Morton is athletic and agile. Also, look out for his safe catching and powerful throws from the deep.

Morton joins a talented group of cricketers from around the region. The whole team is from Barbados, Joshua Dorne (captain), Micah Greenidge, Zachary Carter, Shaquan Belle, Jakeem Pollard and R’Jai Gittens, from Trinidad and Tobago are Brendan Boodoo and Aadian Racha, from the Windward Islands are Earsinho Fontaine, from Jamaica are Tyriek Bryan, Vitel Lawes, and Pajay Nelson, from the Leeward Islands are Matthew Miller, Tanez Francis, Kunal Tilokani and Morton and from Guyana are Afraz Ali Budhoo and Johnathan Van Lange
