Having a calm sea for the swim segment is quite unusual, as in December the water can be rough off Mullet Bay beach. In the past the swim once had to be cancelled as waves were too high. The swim consisted of two laps of a 500 metre triangle before swimmers switched into running mode for the 5 or 10K run through Mullet Bay, Pointe Pirouette, and Cupecoy. 5K was one loop and 10K two loops. Age categories were Individual male and female, including over 60s category, and teams of two.

The overall winners of the 10K individual were Roma Dhanani (Female 19-39) in 1:14:05 and Greg Pigeon (male 40 plus ) in 59:36. In the 5K Individual the winners were Victoria Otto (Female junior) in 56:12 and Vincent Accattato (Male 19-39) in 43:07.

The 10K team category was won by Victoria and Luca in 1:08:48 and 10K Team Women by Team Swim ‘Run (Lois and Christina) in 1:14: 49.

“This year we had a lot more juniors participating as individuals than before,” noted Susy Piscione from Tri Sport.” We had good representation from Lab Sports Academy and Carib Swim Team. And the Over 60s category shows we have a healthier and fitter older population. The 50 plus and 60 plus age groups are getting bigger, as well as the junior categories.”

80 swimmers lined up for the start at Mullet Bay Beach. Every year organisers make it a fun start to remind everyone to relax and not take the race too seriously.  Beginners especially get nervous. It always works and gets everyone laughing. One year it would be dancing into the water, last year was a cabaret, lining up for can-can dancing a la Moulin Rouge, and this year it was green light, red light.

“Every time the whistle blew (three times)you had to stop and make a ballerina or super hero pose,” Susy explained.

Next event is the Ennia Marathon this coming Sunday organised by SXM Roadrunners. Complete results of all age categories and team results are on Tri Sport’s website.
