New road safety signs for cyclists and runners arrive

SIMPSON BAY—Following the tragic accident that took the life of cyclist Bas de Haan on the Airport Road earlier this year, a Road Safety Awareness Board has been created. It comprises members Susy Maidwell Piscione, Jeffrey de la Combe and Maria Collazos.

“Our aim is to make the roads safer for cyclists and pedestrians by bringing awareness,” Susy explained. “We have created an email (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) where road users can send in the license plate numbers of reckless drivers or send in comments on road safety. We also meet continuously with VROMI and the Police Department to come up with solutions to the dangerous conditions for cyclists and pedestrians.”
New road safety awareness signs have arrived and these will be placed at events and during peak hours when cyclists are training on the Airport Road. The signs were purchased with funds raised from the Tropical Shipping Duathlon and through the collaboration of Jeffrey de la Combe from Tropical and the Friendly Island Triathlon Association (FITA).
