MARIGOT—President of Association Moto Action du Nord (AMAN) Miguel Mingau said Tuesday he was very satisfied with the outcome of the drag racing event held Saturday in Grand Case and is already planning the next event for 2017 in the same location.
30 motorbike riders from Guadeloupe, St. Martin and Martinique gathered for the event that was held at night on the RN7 bypass. It was the first event to be organised by the association since 2010. In all six events have been organised to date.
“We would have had more participants but 15 motorbikes got stuck in Guadeloupe because of boat transport problems and had to miss it,” he disclosed. “We knew we were going to get a good crowd of spectators but the five to six thousand spectators we estimated was much more than we were expecting.
“We had no accidents or injuries with the motorbikes. Only an official car caught fire because its fuel line broke but the fire was put out in 11 seconds. Fire extinguishers have to be placed at regular intervals along the course.”
Mingau added the event conformed to all the mandatory requirements to hold such an event such as security, spectator barriers, fire precautions, ambulance etc. The Gendarmerie and Police were monitoring the event. Temporary lighting was also installed by the organisers.
“The motorbikes all had to be inspected and the riders could not race unless they wore protective clothing, helmets and gloves.”
The fastest run of the night went to Victor “Titi” Hodge from French Quarter, completing the 1.8 mile (200 metres) course in 6 seconds 28.
The best qualifying time went to Sebastien Morvan, also from French Quarter, with a time of 6 seconds 40.
One of the participants was Jean-Sebastien Hamlet, President of Union for Democracy’s (UD) youth wing. It was not known how he placed.
