SIMPSON BAY-- Learning Unlimited (LU) was the overall winner of the second annual Domino’s Interschool Sailing Championship. Milton Peters College MPC)was second and Sister Regina finished third.
Five schools including Caribbean International Academy (CIA) and St. Dominic competed in the regatta sponsored by Domino’s Pizza and featured Optimists, Lasers, Picos and RS Visions sailing four races.
In the Optimist class Emma Lennox (LU) dominated the fleet with 4 bullets. Caii Banting (Sister Regina) came in second place and Ajani Blake (LU) came in third.
In the Laser Pico class 3 schools were represented in the top 3. In first place St. Dominic by Lucas Disch, second place MPC by Matthijs Detering and in 3rd place Sister Regina sailed by Melina de Vries and Skylar Peterson.
Some close competition was seen in the Laser class, especially on an individual level as all students represented different schools. At the end of the day Jesse Lake (MPC) came in first place, followed by Nicolas DeTullio (LU) in second place and Grace Cheasley (CIA) in third place.
Experienced teams were racing in the RS Visions, having trained for weeks the teams were ready to represent their schools. The battle between two LU teams finished in a first place for Summer Jean Morton and Cansu Kilic with 4 bullets, followed by Sahil Khatnani and Grant Caputo in second place and Kai Henriquez and Paul Speetjens in third place representing MPC.
The Domino’s Interschool Dinghy Sailing Championship is organized by the Sint Maarten Yacht Club (SMYC) in order to promote the sport of sailing on St. Maarten and to give all the young sailors on the island a chance to represent their schools, where normally they race for themselves or for their Yacht Club.
