CUL DE SAC--With an all-round performance in the batting, bowling and fielding departments, Rev. John A. Gumbs Campus (JAG) secured the 2018 Scotiabank Inter-elementary School Kiddy Cricket Tournament at Caribe Lumber Ballpark on Friday afternoon.
Davenand Singh stoked an impressive 95 not out, in which he smacked 11 fours and five fours. His team, Rev. John A. Gumbs (JAG)Campus, eventually compiled 128 for three in 11 overs.
Hillside Christian Primary (HCP) School responded with 75 for eight in 11 overs to give JAG a 53-run win.
JAG lost two wickets in the first over before Singh and Carlon Celestin repaired the damage with some sensible batting. The two batsmen partnered for 100 runs for the fourth wicket.
Even when Celestin was dismissed for 22 (2x4,1x6), Singh continued to plunder the bowlers to all parts of the field. He was very selective in his stroke play and was able to accurately decide which bowlers and balls to attack during his stroke-filled innings.
HCP's response depended largely on eventual MVP of the tournament Edmond Pieters and his opening partner Leandro Barry.
While Barry played aggressively for his 20 (6x3), Pieters' approach to be watchful and careful against the bowling attack proved to be his downfall. He scored just eight singles in an out-of-character inning.
After the match, Personal Banking Manager of Scotiabank Selma Baker was on hand to give the players their individual and team awards and some tokens from Scotiabank.
The best bowler and best batsman for each school was given a trophy.
For JAG Campus, Singh was the best batsman while Israel Morton was the best bowler. HCP's best batsman was Pieters and the best bowler was Triston Greene. For Leonald Connor Primary, Sezzori Tomlinson was the best batsman while Wayjan Christopher was the best bowler. The best batsman for St. Maarten Seventh-day Adventist Primary School was Marcus Geurcan and the best bowler was André Walker.
The Most Discipled School was JAG Campus.
The most outstanding 20 players of the tournament were identified and given a special certificate. They are scheduled to begin a two-week training camp from 2:00pm today at Caribe Lumber Ballpark.
