Future Champs A look to Jathan Edward for inspiration this season

CUL DE SAC—Future Champs A Cricket Team will look to Jathan Edward for inspiration in this season’s Motorworld T20 tournament. One of the team’s senior players, Edward has demonstrated his ability to excel with both bat and ball.

In the last tournament, he scored 105 runs in eight innings, with a best of 50 against Sun Insurance Jaguars. With the ball, he claimed eight wickets, with best figures of two for 33 off four overs against NAGICO United.

While those figures are respectable, the Leeward Islands Under-19 player is expected to make a greater impact at the local level.

Future Champs A is Cricket St. Maarten’s developmental team comprising players aged 19 and older. In recent months, several talented players have moved up the ranks, leaving Edward with a leading role in the side.

His team has considerable ground to make up after a difficult campaign in the A-Division last season, when they lost seven matches and won only one. It is a far cry from the days when Jathan’s brother, Nathan Edward, and his teammates struck fear into the hearts of opposing teams.

The younger Edward has some emerging talent around him who could help spring a few surprises in the tournament. Players to watch include Kyan Maccow, Jaeden Bramble, Chirag Aswani and Keadani David.

Future Champs A are the only team yet to begin their Motorworld T20 Cup campaign. On October 24, from 2:00pm, they face a bruised NAGICO side looking to recover from a heavy defeat in their opening match. They were bowled out for a below-par 76 in 17.2 overs.

The encounter promises to be an intriguing contest.

In the other weekend fixtures, Veterans take on Future Champs B on October 25, from 10:00am, before Sun Insurance Jaguars and Motorworld Spartans, both coming off victories, face each other.
