Cruise ship passengers disembarking for ‘5K Charity Run for St. Maarten’

PHILIPSBURG--Some 200 cruise ship passengers from Adventure of the Seas will be taking part in a 5K charity run for St. Maarten on Sunday morning, February 25, 2018, Tri Sport’s Juan-Pablo Piscione disclosed.
The running group had signed up with an association called “Run for Fun” which does a run at each island stopover. For St. Maarten it was decided not to do a race but to do a charity run.

“After Hurricane Irma we were getting a lot of questions from mostly Americans who love St. Maarten, asking what they can do to help,” Piscione explained. “As we were already receiving a lot of supplies from the various aid agencies we advised not to send anything but instead organize something with a group that can spend money in St. Maarten to help the economy.
“Out of that idea, this group decided to come here and spend money, but we have also given them a list from K1 Britannia Foundation of essentials that the people need in the recovery after Irma.
“The Run for Fun Association has since told us the group has been going crazy, buying suitcases of stuff from the list to bring to St. Maarten, obviously items that can easily be taken on board ship.”
The 5K run starts at the port, goes into Pointe Blanche, into Bobby’s Marina, up to the end of the Boardwalk at the Walter Plantz Square and then back to the finish banner at the Pasanggrahan Hotel where there will be a prize giving and refreshments.
Some of the runners are parents or family members related to AUC medical students. Local runners will also be able to take part.
