PHILIPSBURG--St. Maarten amateur boxer Shamor Bertram is head to the Caribbean Boxing Championships this weekend in Guyana.
Nearly 100 fighters are expected to step into the ring. Bertram will compete in the Welter weight class.
“I started boxing about four years ago,” said Bertram. “A friend of mine was doing boxing. He invited me. I tried it and have been boxing ever since.”
Bertram works construction and has had three fights. He won all three. One by knock out, one on a decision and one the referee stopped the bout.
“Hand speed, is his biggest asset,” said trainer Shawn “The Pit Bull” Blair. Blair is also the president of the St. Maarten Boxing Federation and is working to have the Friendly Island host the Caribbean Championships in December of 2019.
Blair will be accompanying Bertram to Guyana. “There is a lot of talent on St. Maarten,” said Blair. “I want to see the next generation gets all the opportunities I had and more.”
Making the trip possible are St. Maarten Soccer Federation, Lotus Night Club, Abu-Ghazi Shwarma, Selective Service and NAGICO.
