The Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Project at Winair

The Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Project at Winair

Judencia Moses, Winair HR Officer

1. What inspired Winair to organize Pink Wednesdays and Fridays?

Knowing so many women who have fought and survived breast cancer has inspired Winair to organize Pink Wednesdays and Fridays. Through this initiative, Winair wants to show support for those who are currently fighting breast cancer, celebrate the survivors, and honour the women and families who have been affected by it.

2. What do you hope this initiative will achieve?

I hope this initiative will encourage women to take charge of their health and make breast health a priority. It is important for women to check their breasts regularly and schedule their medical screenings. Early detection can save lives, and I want to use this initiative to remind women that taking care of themselves is just as important as taking care of others.

3. How has the team responded?

The team responded with great enthusiasm! We initially planned to wear pink shirts only on Wednesdays, but the team’s response was so positive that they felt one day was not enough. They wanted to wear pink shirts more than once a week.

4. What does taking part in Breast Cancer Awareness Month mean to you?

Taking part in Breast Cancer Awareness Month means a lot to me because this cause is very close to my heart. Having my mother as a breast cancer survivor makes it personal, and I want to help spread awareness, encourage early detection, and show support to every woman affected by breast cancer.

5. How does it feel to see all of your colleagues wearing pink every Wednesday and Friday?

It feels good to see my colleagues wearing pink and showing their support. It makes me proud to see the team coming together for such an important cause.

6. What conversations has this initiative sparked among staff or with passengers?

This initiative has encouraged staff to remind each other to schedule their breast screenings, with some even asking if they should go together. With the passengers, we are sharing Winair pink bracelets, bags, and lanyards while encouraging them to get checked and prioritize their health.

7. Why do you think it matters for Winair to bring attention to this cause?

I believe it is important for Winair to bring attention to this cause because breast cancer affects so many women and families. As a company, we have a platform to spread awareness, encourage early detection, and remind people that they are not alone. Even a small initiative can make a difference by encouraging someone to get checked and potentially save a life.

8. Is there a moment from this month’s initiative that has stood out to you?

It’s not one specific moment, but hearing staff congratulate me on the initiative and share that they plan to get themselves checked has been very meaningful. It reminds me that this project is making a difference and encouraging people to take their health seriously.

9. What message would you like to share with people affected by breast cancer and their families?

My message is that the journey is not an easy one, not only for the person diagnosed but also for their family. I experienced this with my mom, and I know how important it is to be present, check in on your loved one, offer encouragement, and give them space when they need it. To anyone going through this journey, please remember that you are not alone. Be patient with yourself, lean on the people who care about you, and never be afraid to talk about how you feel. Sometimes, simply being there for someone can make all the difference.

10. How would you like to see this support continue beyond October?

I would like to see this support continue beyond October by reminding everyone to prioritize their health, schedule their yearly check-ups. Breast cancer awareness should not be limited to one month; it is something we should encourage and support throughout the year.
