Washington crush Jaguars, wins for Patriots, Browns

NFL-LIONS-PANTHERSMIAMI-- Quarterback Robert Griffin III suffered a dislocated ankle but back-up Kirk Cousins led the Washington a 41-10 crushing of the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday while the Cleveland Browns upset the New Orleans Saints.

The New England Patriots bounced back from their opening loss to beat Minnesota 30-7 and the Dallas Cowboys also got their first win with a 26-10 victory over Tennessee.

The Buffalo Bills are 2-0 after beating AFC East rivals Miami 29-10 while the Caroline Panthers also claimed their second win with a 24-7 victory over Detroit.

Washinton lost both Griffin and receiver DeSean Jackson to injuries early in the second quarter with coach Jay Gruden saying after the game that Griffin dislocated his ankle.

Back-up Cousins looked comfortable though, throwing for 250 yards and two touchdowns while running back Alfred Morris put up 85 yards and scored two touchdowns as Washington ran out an easy win.

Quarterback Brian Hoyer repaid the faith shown in him by Browns coach Mike Pettine as he led the Browns to an impressive home win over the much-fancied Saints.

A Billy Cundiff field goal with three seconds left on the clock gave Cleveland the victory after the Saints had fought back from 16-3 down in the second quarter, thanks to two touchdowns from tight end Jimmy Graham.

After a Terrance West score for the Browns, Mark Ingram ran in a fourth-quarter touchdown for New Orleans to give them a one-point lead before Cundiff converted from 29 yards for the victory.

Patriots Impress

The Patriots had looked out-of-sorts in their loss to Miami last week but their defense shined against the Vikings, forcing four interceptions by Minnesota quarterback Matt Cassel.

New England took firm control of the game when Chandler Jones ran in a 58-yard return of a blocked field goal in the second quarter.

Minnesota were without running back Adrian Peterson who was deactivated after being arrested and charged with injuring a child.

After facing heavy criticism for their opening defeat, the Cowboys were relieved to have their first win of the year which came with four field goals from Dan Bailey and 167 rushing yards from running back DeMarco Murray including a touchdown.

Rookie wide receiver Sammy Watkins produced a breakout performance for the Buffalo Bills as he had eight receptions for 117 yards and a touchdown as Buffalo brought Miami back down to earth.

C.J. Spiller's 102-yard kickoff return in the third quarter put the Bills firmly in charge while Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill was sacked four times and had four passes batted down.

Former Dolphin Dan Carpenter had five field goals for Buffalo.

The Panthers welcomed Cam Newton back to full fitness and he threw for 281 yards and a touchdown despite being sacked five times.

Carolina were without defensive end Greg Hardy who was listed as inactive as he appeals a domestic violence conviction.

Serbia beat France to join U.S. in World Cup final

basketMADRID-- Dark horses Serbia powered into the basketball World Cup final and will meet holders United States in Sunday's showdown after beating European champions France 90-85 on Friday.

An inspired performance by Milos Teodosic lifted the Serbs as the 27-year old playmaker nailed 24 points, 18 of them in the first half when his team built a 46-32 lead.

France headed into the clash as favourites after stunning hosts Spain in the quarter-finals but were overran in the opening half by a fast-flowing Serbian outfit who engineered plenty of easy baskets.

Teodosic nailed seven of eight shots from the field and also dished our four telling assists converted by centre Miroslav Raduljica, whose physical presence stifled out an athletic French team.

France tightened their defence in the second half and cut the deficit to 84-82 with a flurry of three-pointers but Serbia held on in the closing stages, sparking loud celebrations among their fans in Madrid's City Arena.

Five other Serbian players finished with double scoring digits to cancel out a valiant solo effort by France shooting guard Nicolas Batum, the game's top scorer with 35 points.

France will meet Lithuania in the bronze medal game on Saturday after the Baltic nation were beaten 96-68 by the United States in the other semi-final on Thursday.

Federer, Wawrinka puts Swiss in control of Davis Cup semi

federerGENEVA-- Roger Federer overcame some tough early resistance from Simone Bolelli and Stanislas Wawrinka eased past Fabio Fognini as Switzerland raced 2-0 ahead in their Davis Cup semi-final against Italy in Geneva on Friday.

Federer, bidding to add to his substantial collection of honours by steering the Alpine nation to a first Davis Cup triumph, delighted a capacity crowd in the Palexpo Arena with a 7-6(5) 6-4 6-4 victory.

"Margins were small in the first set," Federer said. "In the second set I was finally able to get the break and that broke the deadlock for me a little bit. I was able to play with the lead which is always easier.

"It was quite frustrating at times when the court is pretty quick. We didn't think it was going to be this fast but when you do serve well you really do feel the benefit."

Seventy-sixth ranked Bolelli, who was surprisingly selected for singles duty ahead of Andreas Seppi by virtue of having fewer previous defeats against the 17-times grand slam champion, stuck to his task impressively on the blue indoor court.

He saved two set points in the opening tiebreak but fired a backhand wide on Federer's third, to the relief of his 33-year-old opponent who was far from his fluent best.

World number three Federer finally secured the first service break of the match in the seventh game of the second set and cruised on to the 36th singles victory of his Davis Cup career.

Dominant Wawrinka

Australian Open champion Wawrinka made light work of world number 17 Fognini and despatched the Italian 6-2 6-3 6-2 in one hour 30 minutes.

After struggling to rediscover the early-season form that won him the Australian Open title, Wawrinka has spoken of his desire to win the Davis Cup and he showed his intent by firing 16 aces and 37 winners past Fognini.

The fiery Swiss snatched an early break in the opening set before racing into a 4-1 lead as Fognini had no answer to the world number four's clean hitting.

More crisp and punchy strokes followed over the next two sets as Wawrinka ensured Switzerland took a 2-0 lead into Saturday's doubles.

Switzerland have reached the final once, losing to the U.S. in 1992, while Italy got there in 1998, going down to Sweden.
