NEW YORK, United States--Barbados-born superstar Rihanna did not disappoint at the 2018 Met Gala, and owned the red carpet for the ball which she co-hosted with Anna Wintour, Donatella Versace and Amal Clooney on Monday night.
Sticking to the theme of the ball, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” but doing it with her own undeniable flair, Rihanna dominated the red carpet in a Pope-inspired piece that left tongues wagging.
Maintaining her reputation for being among the best-dressed at the event every year, the singer, actor and fashion designer wore a heavily embellished custom-made John Galliano gown complete with crosses and a beaded bishop’s headdress to match, reminiscent of the papal tiaras worn by popes from the medieval era up until the mid-1960s. Her outfit was accessorised with a pearl anklet and a bejewelled crucifix necklace.
But not all the reviews were good.
The UK’s Evening Standard reported that Rihanna had sparked a religious backlash with her outfit.
While she told Vogue that it would have been “a sin not to wear” the piece, many religious fans slammed the look as “disgusting” and “offensive.” ~ Caribbean360 ~
