Two isolated fires burn on Sentry Hill

SENTRY HILL--The Fire Department closely monitored, but could not actively quell two isolated hilltop bush fires on Sentry Hill that started Thursday afternoon and continued into the night.

The Department of Communication DComm sent out an urgent press notice around 5:30pm to warn residents, especially those in the Cole Bay area, that smoke was moving in that direction. It warned residents who might suffer from asthma or other respiratory issues to close their windows.

“The Fire Department will closely monitor the fire, as it may go over Sentry Hill into the Cole Bay hillside area. High wind gusts have been pushing the flames towards” this area, the release warned. “Fire Department resources will be utilised if necessary along hillside roads in the event the fire slowly comes down the hill towards a residential area.”

The fire still burned up to late last night, but was not close to any homes
