MARIGOT--The Préfecture disclosed it has launched a road safety campaign on its Facebook page.
Named “Together, let’s make the roads safer,” the campaign will appear on the Facebook page each Friday until October 19, 2015. It was prompted by a speech from Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve on August 14 when he called on motorists to be more civilised on the roads.
Citing figures for 2015, the Préfecture said in a release road safety statistics were as worrying locally as they are nationally. In the Northern Islands for example, the majority of infractions recorded from controls by Gendarmes involved alcohol consumption, and absence of wearing seat belts or crash helmets.
There was also an increase in cases of drivers failing to give priority to other road users and driving under the influence of drugs. Statistically, most accidents involving alcohol or drugs left victims at least hospitalised with injuries.
Since the start of 2015, four persons have lost their lives on the roads, an increase of 26 per cent. In addition, the number of hospitalisations following accidents increased by 60 per cent.
