- EUSTATIUS--The placement of nets for the cliff-protection project commenced Saturday, August 31. The streets to the entrance of Fort Oranje were closed off from the Slave Path, Cool Corner, the hill compound and the monument. Otherwise, all the streets were accessible.
There were security officers present at select locations near the project works.
The cliff-protection project is being financed by the Ministries of Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations; Education, Culture and Science; and Infrastructure and Water Management.
The cliffs with a good view of the project were lined on Saturday with persons trying to take photographs of the helicopter transporting mesh wire to the cliffs of Fort Oranje and the workers rappelling down the cliffs to attach the netting. Also in Lower Town persons were observing the work.
The speed at which the workers of French contractor Acrobat X were seen scaling the walls was breath-taking.
The work on the cliff protection project is expected to resume today, Monday. The project is expected to be completed before the end of March 2020.
