CAY HILL-- St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) has acquired a laparoscopy tower as the newest addition to medical equipment in its Operation Room Department.
The high definition Richard Wolf laparoscopy tower is an upgrade in biomedical technology and it replaces the existing dysfunctional tower, SMMC said in a press release on Tuesday.
The laparoscopy tower is used to provide visualization of the anatomy during minimal invasive surgery. The Operating Room Department “is extremely proud” of the state-of-the-art equipment, which was used for the first time on August 20.
Managing director Mederi Frank Curiel said SMMC has reason to be proud, as the hospital currently owns the most innovative laparoscopy tower in the Dutch Caribbean.
Mederi, an Aruban-based medical distributor, provided training to SMMC’s Operating Room staff on the best use of the “user-friendly equipment.”
“With this high definition laparoscopy tower, surgeons can perform surgeries with better visual quality, making the entire procedure more efficient and reducing surgery time,” SMMC said in the release.
“What is also special about this equipment is the ability to save images and videos of the procedure on a removable memory stick. This can later be used to print or save images to the patient’s file. Furthermore, videos of procedures can be saved and used for instructional purposes.”
SMMC said its staffers are happy with the equipment, which will be “a great tool” in performing laparoscopic surgeries.
