WILLEMSTAD--The Muslim community in Curaçao on Friday celebrated the first day of Eid Al Fitr after 29 days of Ramadan.
During Ramadan believers fast from 5 o’clock in the morning (sunrise) until 7:00pm (sunset) with no eating or drinking during that time as they concentrate on their religion and devotion to Allah.
The Muslim community is in Curaçao since the 19th century. The local mosque exists since 1965 on Weg naar Welgelegen and it was one of the first in the region.
Chairman of the island’s community Yehia Baroud said he must always think of deceased Roman Catholic Bishop Willem Ellis, who said he is satisfied that the house where he was born and raised became the Muslim centre, meaning that it is a house where God is served.
The event was marked on Friday morning at 8:30 with prayer in mosque Omar Bin Al-Khattab.
