Many would ask “who needs to read books now that smartphones have come into our lives, right?” But this is a very wrong view, according to Gwendoline van Putten School Dutch language teacher Natasha Mathurin. “Reading books remains the most important way to learn about things, about people and about life itself.” Mathurin recently ran the Reading Week at St. Eustatius Public Library. Other members of the teaching staff and volunteers assisted with the activity aimed at students ages 13 to 17. The older students dressed up as animal characters and took turns to read stories to younger ones. The Big Bad Wolf from the Little Red Riding Hood tale was invited to join the reading activity, but his entrance attracted more hugs than fear. “It seems that our pupils can not only read books, but read faces even when disguised,” Mathurin said.
