In the Hot Seat with JonnyGuy

For this week’s Hot Seat, Out ‘N About is featuring JonnyGuy – a music artiste, who will be on stage this year at the 46th edition of the famous Heineken Regatta.

1: How would you describe your musical journey so far?

Music has always been a passion project for me. I’m inspired by the way songs can shape our motives and influence the direction of our lives. Even when I’ve tried to ignore its calling, I find my heart drawn right back to its rhythm.

2: Who inspired you to start making music?

Bob Marley and Nirvana.

3: How has your sound or style evolved over the years?

I’ve been inspired by many genres over the years, but today I draw from my African heritage and my St. Maarten Caribbean upbringing, blending both cultures to create music that feels like a bridge between the motherland and the islands.

4: How do you usually approach writing or creating new music?

There’s something very unique about creating music. I believe sound and songs are constantly surrounding us; it simply depends on when we’re open enough for them to present themselves.

5: Where do you draw inspiration from when creating songs?

I’m inspired by cultures; my main influence today is Caribbean and African music culture.

6: How do you balance staying true to yourself while also evolving as an artiste?

I find the best way to hold the power of creativity in your hands, is to not have to depend on it to survive.

7: What can fans expect from your music this year?

They can expect a deep expression of years of inspiration and my gratitude to be able to share my musical journey to the listening ear.

8: How would you describe your live performance style?

My style is inspired by reggae music influences and African percussion rhythms.

9: What do you enjoy most about performing on stage?

It is a gift to be able to perform and share music on any platform. This brings me true joy.

10: What makes a great crowd for you as a performer?

Connection.

11: Do you approach festival performances differently than club or concert shows?

No, not really. I try to approach each show exactly the same way regardless of the setting.

12: What does it mean to you to perform at the Heineken Regatta?

To be able to share my music on such a stage is a true privilege.

13: How does performing in the Caribbean compare to other places you’ve performed?

What I’ve learned from performing in other places is that every culture listens differently. In the Caribbean, there is a high energy and a passion for a good time!

14: What’s next for you after the Heineken Regatta?

I usually tour Europe in the summer season.

15: What message do you hope your music leaves with listeners?

I hope you feel fulfilled with what you hear and walk away inspired.

16: How important is fan-support to your journey?

Without fans, you are playing to yourself. Fans are everything.

17: What do you hope fans feel when they hear or see you perform?

If I can impact you with positive inspiration, I will be very grateful.

18: What advice would you give to young artistes trying to break into the industry?

If your motives are in the right place, your music will shine unconditionally for the world to hear.
