Enjoying Festivals Safely

The Caribbean’s festive season brings vibrant music, culture, sailing and parades – and knowing how to stay safe helps make your experience unforgettable for all the right reasons. Whether you’re attending the Heineken Regatta, dancing at SXM Festival, or preparing for Carnival, here are key tips and insights for enjoying the celebrations responsibly in Sint Maarten / Saint Martin.

46TH HEINEKEN REGATTA (MARCH 5-8)

The St. Maarten Heineken Regatta is one of the Caribbean’s premier sailing and party events, held annually all around the island. It combines world-class yacht racing with beachside concerts, nightlife, and large social gatherings.

Tips for a safe, fun Regatta

  • Plan transportation in advance: Traffic and parking near event venues can be congested. Arrange taxis, shuttle services, or designated drivers ahead of time. Plan for the Simpson Bay Bridge to go up on the regular with mainly sailing boats going through it – this, unfortunately, does cause traffic in all directions at long lengths of time.

  • Respect local laws and enforcement: Authorities typically increase police presence during the Regatta to maintain safety.

  • Drink responsibly: Alcohol consumption is common at Regatta events. Pace yourself, alternate with water, try a Heineken 0.0, bring a water bottle to refill at the EXOWATER station, and avoid accepting drinks from strangers.

  • Protect yourself from the sun: March temperatures are high, and time spent near the water increases sun exposure. Use sunscreen, wear light clothing including a hat, and stay hydrated.

  • Use reputable vendors: Purchase food and drinks from official event locations to reduce health risks.

9th SXM FESTIVAL (MARCH 18-22)

The SXM Festival is a multi-day electronic music experience held across beaches, villas, and venues on both the Dutch and French sides of the island. It attracts international DJs and thousands of visitors.

Festival safety and etiquette

  • Hydration and rest are essential: Long dance sessions combined with tropical heat increase the risk of dehydration and exhaustion.

  • Know the event policies: SXM Festival uses wristbands and often operates cashless systems. Bring valid identification and review official guidelines before attending at sxmfestival.com/faq.

  • Practice crowd awareness: Secure phones and wallets in zipped pockets or anti-theft bags. Avoid displaying valuables.

  • Respect consent and personal boundaries: Festival organizers promote a culture of respect and safety. Look out for friends and report concerns to event staff.

Know emergency contacts: Emergency number 911 operates on the Dutch side of the island. On the French side, emergency services are reached via 15 (medical) or 17 (police).

55TH CARNIVAL SEASON (MARCH 14 -MAY 5)

Carnival in Sint Maarten / Saint Martin is an incredible cultural celebration featuring parades, live music, food villages, and community events. It is one of the most anticipated annual traditions on the island.

Carnival Safety Pointers

  • Expect road closures: Parade routes and village events can affect traffic. Plan alternate routes and agree on meeting points if attending in a group.

  • Stay alert in large crowds: Keep children close and store emergency contact information securely.

  • Prepare for heat exposure: Carnival events often take place during the hottest part of the day. Wear breathable clothing, hats, and sunscreen, and drink water regularly.

  • Limit valuables: Bring only essential items and avoid wearing expensive jewellery.

  • Consider travel insurance: Visitors should ensure they have medical coverage while traveling, particularly during large-scale public events.
