ST. EUSTATIUS--Tuesday night was filled with excitement as thirteen Bethel Methodist Primary School pupils attended a graduation ceremony held in their honour. The children arrived in style, as they were escorted by vehicles of the Caribbean Netherlands Police Force and the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee.

Government Commissioner Marnix van Rij and his wife Courtney, Deputy Government Commissioner Alida Francis, former school principal Ellis Woodley, school board members, parents/guardians and many well-wishers attended the event at Johan Cruijff Court which was decorated in red. The theme for the night was “Soaring with Confidence”.

Francis said a few words of encouragement, empowerment and wisdom to the youngsters and extended her congratulations.

Chairman of the board Reverend Vinca Celestine conducted the convocation at the start of the evening, which featured many speeches and performances by faculty, parents and others in bidding farewell to the graduating pupils, who will be starting at Gwendoline Van Putten Secondary School.

The St. Eustatius Expertise Center Education made a presentation and school principal Jarmila Wilson-Berkel reflected on the “tough” year the pupils had due to the distance learning implemented during the coronavirus pandemic. She commended the youngsters on their perseverance and hard work.

Keynote speaker and parent Junior “Problem Child” Courtar encouraged the children to do their best and never give up. He said there is nothing wrong with changing one’s mind about a career choice later in your life, “as the sky is the limit” and they can soar with whatever they decide to do in life, as long as they put in their hard work. He congratulated the graduates on their achievement and wished them much success on their new educational journey.

The St. Eustatius Historical Foundation Simon Doncker Club performed a special dance for all those in attendance.
