MIDDLE REGION--A beautification project was held over the weekend at the Multi-Functional Recreational Park in Middle Region that is currently under construction. The wall of the gym hall was decorated by many colourful paintings created by members of the Middle Region community and Sister Marie Laurence School pupils.

“In our ongoing efforts to create a true community school at the new Sister Marie Laurence Exceptional School, this project was just one of many more to come where the Foundation Catholic Education St. Maarten SKOS and the Community Council of Middle Region/Defiance will collaborate to build a meaningful and strong relationship between the school and the district,” said the foundation’s project manager Tanja Frederiks.

“This beautification project actually went a bit deeper, as we witnessed amazing family bonding moments as well. Teams of families came out to participate: there were father and daughter teams, father and son teams, aunties and uncles coming out with their nieces and nephews, groups of cousins spending the afternoon together. It was really heart-warming to witness,” said Frederiks.

Some key organisations that are part of the collaborative efforts to enhance the Middle Region district are Rotary Club of St. Maarten, St. Maarten Red Cross and St. Maarten Development Foundation (SMDF).

Persons shared ideas and discussed future plans during the beautification event. The drawings of the new school were on display, creating a lot of excitement for the future of the school and the district.

Community Council President Anjelica Chittick said she was “very thankful” to the community members for coming out to participate in this beautification project. “Thanks to those persons who came out and helped make this event a success. I also would like to thank Mrs. Tanja Frederiks for her big role of getting these great projects off the ground. Her dedication and determination are really appreciated,” said Chittick.

Contributing their time as volunteers were artists Annabelle Verheij, Annemiek van Kerkhof-Posthuma and Middle Region son-of-the-soil Chrisford Shillingford.

Sponsors of this event were Sherwin Williams, Domino’s Pizza, Dental Clinic Halley, Caribbean General Contractors (CGC), SMDF and SKOS.
