Undesirable delay

Today’s news that the rebuilding of Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIA) has been stalled (see related story) is very unfortunate. Problems with the insurance claim are said to be the reason.
This obviously regards a matter between two companies that needs to be worked out by them or in court if necessary.
However, PJIA is not only government-owned, but the island’s main gateway used by stayover visitors who to a large extent drive the local tourism economy. The airport may thus be considered a vital institution.
It is therefore of paramount importance to the entire population that the reconstruction process at PJIA starts sooner rather than later. Despite continuing efforts to improve the current temporary facilities, having the terminal back in operation is crucial for efforts to revive the dominant hospitality industry.
If the apparent dispute persists, the Council of Ministers may have to explore possibilities for arranging an advance to initiate the work pending a settlement. Perhaps some of the recovery funding provided by the Netherlands could even be designated for this purpose.
The reality is that the destination is almost completely dependent on income generated by guests, most of whom come in by plane. Consequently, this is one highly undesirable delay “The Friendly Island” simply cannot afford.
