PHILIPSBURG--The Utrecht Bulls from the Netherlands defeated St. Maarten in a friendly women’s basketball game at L.B. Scott Sports Auditorium Thursday. Bulls won 59-30.
Yeshe Zoutenbier led the Bulls charge with 18 points and was assisted by Sanne Roeles with 16 points.
Selah Fleming top scored for St. Maarten with 12 points, including a 3-pointer.
The Bulls visited the Friendly Island to play ball, enjoy summer like weather and visit an old teammate. Femke Jansen, a lawyer, left the team approximately seven months ago and moved to St. Maarten.
She invited the team for a visit and they came. They also brought gifts in the form of basketballs donated to Walichi Basketball Association by the Dutch Basketball Association.
Jansen missed basketball so went looking for a game and found Walichi. She and her new teammates train regularly in preparation for the start of the season.
“Walichi Basketball Association did a great job organizing the game, arranging referees and getting the visiting team some gifts to remember St. Maarten,” said Jansen.
“The Minister of Sports, (Silveria Jacobs,) was there to welcome both teams and open the game.”
