Taekwondo students endure harsh conditions, earn belts

MIDDLE REGION—Nearly 30 students from the King Yen Taekwondo School attended the first quarterly 2018 belt grading exams in the Gymnasium of the Helmich Snijiders Hillside Christian School Saturday.

These exams are in accordance with the examination rules and regulations of the World Tae Kwon Do Federation (WTF) and the Kukkiwon under the auspices of the St. Maarten Tae Kwon Do Federation.
“Most students have done very well once again and Tae Kwon Do in general took another development for our country St. Maarten and for our International participation,” said Grandmaster Theo Liu.
“The students endured difficult circumstances due to the storm. We can accomidate less students as one of the gyms we normal train was damaged and is unusable and the gym in St. Peters has no light and a leaking roof.
Grand Master Liu was assisted by his home growth black belt holders Master Paul Djasmin, Lee – Ann Liu and Ivyanne Louisa,
The candidates had the opportunity to show the different techniques the examining board requested them to perform, on an individual basis. The students were tested for gymnastics and flexibility, basic techniques and patterns while the higher belts were also tested on free sparring and break-tests with either hand- or foot technique.
“We had quite some students that took an exam for the first time and the results were encouraging” said Master Liu who frequently takes his students to international tournaments where they achieve great results and take home many gold medals. Coming up in March they will participate again in another International Taekwondo tournament.
