Statia opens 2019 volleyball season

ST. EUSTATIUS -- St. Eustatius Volleyball Association (SEVA)  kicked off the 2019 volleyball season Saturday.   A good crowd turn out at the Earl N. Merkman Sports Hall. Deputy Government Commissioner of Sports Mervyn Stegers said a few words.


   “It is not all about winning and being the best, it’s about enjoying the experience and have fun playing together with their teammates. I hope that the end of the tournament, you say to yourselves that next year we will all come back and play together again because the experience was fun.”
  Stegers then served the first ball to open the season.
DJ Ricky G provided the entertainment for the evening as well as various performances by several singers and groups.
   Phoenix started their campaign to defend their title against the Serv-ivors.  Phoenix won 3-0 (25-12, 25-19 and 25-15). The referees for the first game were Monique Martis and Carlos Lopes.
  In the second game AvenGerz, a new team played Bomb Threat. Bomb Threat won 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-18 and 25-20). The referees were Carlos Lopes and Granville Hassell.
  AvenGerz will take on the Phoenix on Tuesday, starting at 7:30pm.
The second game will feature Dynamite, the male defending champions against Progressive.
