ARUBA—St. Maarten Kickboxer Stephan Ellis won his international debut fight against Alex Werleman from Stay Thai Fit Aruba in the light heavy weight category in the Battle of Best Muay Thai Championship Saturday night in a packed Centro Deportivo Betico Croes.
This fight was Ellis first international. He had spent the last two months preparing with daily trainings for this bout. When the bell sounded for the first round Ellis immediately started attacking his opponent. The game plan was to move a lot and land as much kicks as possible. This strategy proofed successful and Ellis managed to land many kicks to Werleman’s legs.
Werleman countered by trying to get in close and clinch with Ellis. This however did not work out well for the Aruban as Ellis dominated the clinch and was able to land several knees to the ribs and abdomen.
The second round went very similar and the leg kicks started taking a tole on the mobility of Werleman.
In the third and last round, Werleman came out of his corner very aggressively, most likely trying to make up with a knock down or knock out to still have a chance at winning. Ellis was surprised for a short period and quickly recovered and proceeded with his attacks to the legs.
At the end of the round there was no doubt and Ellis unanimously was called the winner.
Immediately after that fight, 15 year old Trinity Romney from St. Maarten was scheduled to make his debut. Trinity took this fight on a very short notice to substitute for a fighter who got injured at work and no longer was able to travel to Aruba for the match. After an accelerated two week competition preparation Trinity stepped up to the plate to represent St. Maarten against Jayron Trimon from Aruba. Trimon who was heavier and more experienced than Trinity seemed very confident during the weigh in and face off event.
Trinity fought a smart fight against Trimon and was able to neutralize most of the power attacks he launched by excellent leg work and movement. At the end of the 3 round bout this however was not enough and the judges declared Jayron Trimon the winner.
The event was organized by the Caribbean Muay Thai Association in combination with the Muay thai kickboxing Aruba federation.
“I am extremely pleased with the results of the fighters and thank all people that have assisted with training and preparing the team for this tournament,” said Coach Marco London.
The kickboxing team trains three times a week at Milton Peters College gymnasium. People interested in joining or seeing Video footage and pictures of the event can visit the club’s Facebook pages: www.facebook.com/SityodtongMuayTaiKickboxingSintMaarten.
