PHILIPSBURG--The St. Maarten U13 Netball players competed promisingly with their St. Kitts counterparts over the weekend.
The young girls from the Sunshine City flew over to St. Kitts and played two matches. Although they lost both matches, the exposure and experience was priceless according to members of the coaching staff.
Coach Lisa Timothy in an invited comment stated that the experience was good for the girls. “It was a great experience for the girls because they were up against a team that plays Netball day in, day out. The exposure was also good for them because they got an opportunity to play at a higher level than what they played in the school tournament.” stated a satisfied coach Timothy.
The St. Maarten team, which was selected after the Inter-elementary School Netball Tournament in June, lost the two matches by very narrow margins. The score in the first match was 12 to 8 and the second match was 14 to 11.
St. Maarten player Mariam Carbon was the player of the tournament while Sarai Willemsburg was named the defender of the tournament.
The trip to St. Kitts was made possible through the kind donations from St. Maarten Harbour Holding Company (St. Maarten Port), St. Maarten Economic Development Corporation NV, Motorworld, St. Maarten Tourist Office and President of St. Maarten Netball Federation, Javon Edwards.
The players were Captain Ashley Lake, Ariel Goberdhan, Rianna Roberts, Kiahara Fleming, Sarai Willemsburg, Azareah Bontiff, Mariam Carbon, Syriaana Murray-Viotty, Captain Syandra Ceasar, Makeyah Moore, Janae Euson, Chinasa Ejingiri, Shervanna Diedrick and Rikisha Carty.
The local federation is planning another overseas trip for the girls soon.
