PHILIPSBURG–The St. Lucia Volleyball team swept the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA) championship with an authoritative win against the British Virgin Islands (BVI) in the final at the L.B. Scott Sports Auditorium on Sunday night.

The Lucian ladies, backed by a vociferous crowd of St. Lucians living here, bombarded the opposition with booming serves and spikes, which, at one time, seemed to have thrown in the towel. The champions paraded the court with skill and agility to outjump and outsmart their counterparts to three straight crushing defeats; 25-17, 25-10, 25-13. St. Lucia played four matches in the tournament and won all in straight sets except against Antigua and Barbuda in the semi-final. That matches finished 18-25, 25-13, 25-15, 27-25.
The young local girls fought bravely through the tournament and warmed the heart of the local spectators with their enthusiasm and resilient attitude. For BVI to get to the final, they defeated St. Maarten in the semi-final. The scores in that match were 25-12, 29-31, 25-21, and 25-23 in favour of BVI. In the final preliminary match to book a semi-final spot, the local girls had to fight tooth and nail, aided by a boisterous crowd, to beat Grenada. That match seesawed back and forth, but the home team barely crawled over the line each time. Much to the relief of the players and the exuberant crowd, St. Maarten won the match; 25-19, 25-22, 25-27, 30-28. In their first match of the tournament, the home team had to play a fifth set to overcome a determined Anguilla; 26-24, 20-25, 29-27, 27-25, 15-12.
St. Maarten finished fourth in the seven-team tournament. The final ranking after the tournament shows St. Lucia in the first place, BVI, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Maarten, Grenada, Anguilla and St. Eustatius.
At the presentation, which was graced with the presence of Rudolphe Samuel, Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, Kerin Neptune (#9) from St. Lucia walked away with most of the individual prizes. She was the MVP, the Best Receiver, the Best Outside Hitter (OH1) and Best Server. St. Maarten Tivona Trotman (#11) collected two trophies; the Best Digger and Libero. The Best Scorer, Best Middle Blocker (MB1) and Best Outsider Hitter (OH1) was Shoranda Pickering (#6) from St. Lucia. The Best Setter was Jomelar Billy (#4) from Grenada, and Chenoa Evans (#14) was the Best Opposite.
