Round the Island Boat Race to be named after Sir Emile

ANGUILLA—Chief Minister Victor Banks announced at the funeral service of the late Sir Emile Gumbs that the Anguilla Day Boat Race is to be named “The Sir Emile Gumbs Anguilla Day Boat Race.” This comes following a suggestion by Parliamentary Secretary Cardigan Connor during his tribute in the House of Assembly on Wednesday, May 23, and was approved by the Executive Council the following day.

Banks said it is as a memorial to Sir Emile’s contribution to the island’s proud heritage in boat racing. Last year Sir Emile started the boat race alongside Connor. He has always been a keen boat racing enthusiast and for many years owned a sailing boat Sagaboy that won many races. He did not often sail in the races but was very particular about the sails, rigging, and any changes to the hull that took place and managed his boat with great attention to details.
This year’s race will start at 9.30 on May 30 with 15 A Class boats competing. The race is a tough one and usually takes between five to six hours according to the wind conditions. It is sponsored by the Government of Anguilla.
