SIMPSON BAY—The Greenhouse effect was alive and well on Sunday, in a literal sense, heating up the many participants of the popular restaurant’s third Road Classic, though judging by the pace of the race, the brutal heat didn’t appear to affect the faster categories.
It was another great turnout from the usual suspects, and many weekend warriors most of whom chose the Novice category, a less demanding two loops of 36k but still with no respite from the heat.
The loop took the riders from the start outside the Taste Factory to Porto Cupecoy via Cole Bay, Union, Road, Causeway Bridge, Airport Road, Maho, Mullet Bay and Cupecoy.
The race started later than expected, just before 10:00am, due to the police escorts apparently having to attend to two other events before the Greenhouse race.
VCG’s Dean Hodge (that man again) won the Elite category (72K) seemingly with ease, out pacing Double Trouble’s Sherwin Osbourne while Edouard “Dedou” Benitez took third. Dean’s first prize came with a chocolate cake.
Masters (57K) was won by a disturbingly in-form Dick Luttekes, denying Ronan Garnier in second and Luc Goritsza, third.
Annelies Starreveld rode up to expectation winning the ladies category (36K) Murielle Lancien Paul was second and Susy Piscione, third. Nicole Erato had the misfortune to have a flat.
Juniors (72K) was won by Daan Carty, Zambezi Richardson was second and Kianny Noel, third. Adelio Brooks was fourth.
John Charlery won the Novice category (36K) Kenny Carty was second, and Ruminni Rogers finished third.
The Big Belly category (36K) was won by Alfred Maccow with Gerald Gumbs in second place.
Back in the welcome shade of the restaurant everyone enjoyed the lunch and beers. The first five in each category won cash prizes and the top three the smart Greenhouse jerseys and bibs.
Rider times were not immediately available.
