~ 31 boats compete in Anguilla Dinghy Regatta ~

ANGUILLA--Young sailors from St. Barths, St. Maarten and Anguilla competed in the Anguilla Dinghy Regatta held on Saturday, January 19. St, Barths proved to be the strongest team winning the majority of races. Organisers noted that they were very efficient, well coached and deserved to win.


  There were five races altogether with two classes of Optimists – gold and silver. In the gold fleet, which is for more experienced sailors, there were three boats from St. Barths and one from St. Maarten. In the silver class there were 19 boats in the fleet with nine from St. Barths, six from St. Maarten and four from Anguilla. There were seven laser boats and three 420s.
  First place winner in the laser class was Lorenzo Mayer from St. Barths, and in the 420 races St. Maarten won and Anguilla was in second place. Antonin Sciou from St. Barths won the gold class for the optimist boats, and Lolie Oswald also from St. Barths won in the silver. Anguilla placed third in the silver fleet. Oswald was also awarded the prize for the Best Girl on the Water.
  Prizes included attractive sailboat sculptures sponsored by the Anguilla Sports Department, T-shirts sponsored by Anguilla Aluminum and bags given to each participant sponsored by Budget Marine. Other sponsors included Mingz Grocery store, Skiffles residents, Lagoonies Bar and Enigma Charters.
  The regatta was organised by the Anguilla Sailing Association and the Anguilla Youth Sailing Club. It was reported that the wind conditions were good, the races were run efficiently and a great time was had by all.
