Israel Morton was selected to be a member of the West Indies U19 team to compete against Sri Lanka U19 team in seven one-day matches in Antigua.
AIRPORT— Israel Morton became the latest cricketer from St. Maarten to be selected for the West Indies U19 team.
He joined players such as Kaecy Carty and Nathan Edward (twice) as players who wore the maroon at the youth level.
Morton is a talented youth cricketer. He bowls left-arm spin, is a powerful right-handed batsman, and is an extremely athletic fielder.
He started his cricket career at the elementary school level in the Scotia Bank Kiddies Cricket Programme and went on to represent St. Maarten and the Leeward Islands at the U15, U17, and U19 levels.
Morton shone brightly for the Leeward Islands in the just-concluded West Indies U19 tournament. He was third in the Most Wickets category for the tournament, which included teams from Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, the Windward Islands, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Morton collected 14 wickets in five matches. His best bowling figures were five for 27 against the United States of America 2, a game the Leewards won by 66 runs.
In Antigua, the West Indies U19 team is scheduled to play the Sri Lanka U19 team from August 25 to September 16.
The series serves as vital match preparation for the side ahead of the 2026 ICC Men’s Under 19 World Cup in Zimbabwe and Namibia next January.
Cricket West Indies Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe stated “Beyond the immediate competition, this tour represents a development opportunity for both teams — allowing our players to test their skills, build confidence and understand the standards required to excel at the next level.”
The West Indies U19 team will also contest a tri-series with England and the USA later in the year.
Morton joins a talented group of cricketers from around the region. The full team is from Barbados, Joshua Dorne (captain), Micah Greenidge, Zachary Carter, Shaquan Belle, Jakeem Pollard and R’Jai Gittens, from Trinidad and Tobago are Brendan Boodoo and Aadian Racha, from the Windward Islands are Earsinho Fontaine, from Jamaica are Tyriek Bryan, Vitel Lawes, and Pajay Nelson, from Leeward Islands are Matthew Miller and Morton and from Guyana are Afraz Ali Budhoo and Johnathan Van Lange.
