Island Water World 1 wins Heineken warm-up regatta

SIMPSON BAY--Frits Bus’s Island Water World 1 team won Sunday’s annual Heineken warm-up regatta organized by St. Maarten Yacht Club.

The regatta is the last chance for local racing and cruising yachts to sharpen their skills and win trophies for St. Maarten at this coming weekend’s 38th St. Maarten Heineken Regatta. Once again, the battle was on between the three Melges 24s.

Island Water World 1 took first place in the Racing Class with two bullets and two second places. Second-placed Jan van den Eynde on his new boat Wanna B showed great improvement to post three third places, one first place and one second place. Gill Racing Team scored a fourth, a first, and two third places.

Island Water World 1 is now leading the 2017/18 keelboat series.

Cruising Class was won by Garth Steyn’s team on the Jeaneau Sunfast 20 from Lagoon Sailboat Rentals (LSR) with three first places and a fourth place.

Racing starts in earnest on Thursday with the Commodore’s Cup leading into the first day of the Heineken Regatta on Friday, March 2.
