Hillside Christian beat JAG for cricket championship

CUL DE SAC--Hillside Christian Primary School outplayed Rev. John A. Gumbs Campus to lift the championship trophy for the Inter-elementary School tournament which was sponsored by Cricket St. Maarten.

The tournament which was held in the interim for the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket Inter-elementary School tournament which is usually held in June, had the same excitement and intensity.

Four teams participated in the tournament. They were Hillside Christian Primary, Rev. John A. Gumbs Campus, Seventh-day Adventist Primary and Leonald Connor Primary.

On Friday, in the final, Hillside Christian Primary batted and posted its lowest total of the tournament: 67. That score turned out to be a winning total as the opposition folded meekly for their lowest score of the tournament too: 54.

Edmond Pieters was the top scorer for the winners with 36, which was decorated with three fours and one six. Leandro Barry who helped his team win most of their matches from a weak position contributed 11 (2x4) this time, while Roever Whit made 10 (1x6).

In reply, JAG Campus which depended heavily on its Captain Davenand Singh to score runs, lost him via the run out route in the first over for just one.

Nikhilesh Raghubir steady the run chase with boundaries through the cover region but his dismissal led to a steady flow of wickets. He hit 39 that included five fours and two sixes. He was the only batsman in double figures.

In the end, Christian Hillside Primary players emerged victorious after displaying a superb effort in the field, with their bowling and fielding efforts.

Singh collected the trophy for the most runs in the tournament. He scored 222 runs with a best score of 146 which is the new record Primary school cricket.

Rogan Benjamin of Hillside Christian Primary collected the trophy for the best bowler. He collected seven wickets in the tournament. In this tournament, each player has to bowl just one over per match for the 11 overs per side contest.

The next tournament will be the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket tournament in June. JAG is presently the defending champion but will be seriously challenged to retain the trophy.
